When Super
Grit was sent to trainer Mark Capone in May 1999, he was already
in bad shape. This 6-year-old standardbred had a poor appetite
and had been a chronic user of CARAFATE®
(sucralfate). So, Mark Capone had him evaluated by veterinarian
Dr. Barrey Danvers at Show Place Farms.
Given the
symptoms of Super Grit, the veterinary staff did not conduct endoscopy
to confirm the ulcers. Rather the horse was immediately started
on GASTROGARD (omeprazole) based on his chronic stomach problems.
He received the 28-day treatment. Mr. Capone, who has a lot of
experience training horses with chronic stomach problems and currently
has more than 10 horses on GASTROGARD, is really impressed. "This
product is really amazing," he said. "Some horses have improved
in ten days."
By all accounts,
Super Grit now eats well, isn't nervous, and has been training
well. There are always those subtle differences that his trainers
can detect, which verify that he's feeling much better.
According
to Mr. Capone, Super Grit's improvement has been "tremendous".
"His performance has really stepped up another notch this year."
This was a horse who had chronic stomach problems. CARAFATE helped
but never truly healed the ulcers.
Ulcers are
now under control. Super Grit remained on GASTROGARD at the maintenance
dose for at least a month. As he and his trainers get past his
bout with ulcers, everyone can concentrate on winning. And winning
is just where this horse has been.
In August,
1999, four weeks after starting treatment, Super Grit won the
BreederŐs Crown for Aged Trotters and took 2nd place in Nat Ray
Final, both at the Meadowlands, N.J. He won the elimination and
then took third overall at the Maple Leaf Trot in Ontario, Canada,
and won the Trot de Mondial, defeating world-renown Moni Maker,
in Montreal, Quebec. In eight starts, Super Grit won over $700,000.
