Federal Trial
(age 4) was one of the first horses to participate in the GREAT
program, the first equine gastric ulcer screening program, at
Churchill Downs. Like the majority of horses who were scoped,
the endoscopy revealed ulcers. According to Trainer Mickey Goldfine,
this diagnosis came as a surprise because Federal Trial was eating
well, performing well, and looking good.
Federal Trial
began immediate treatment on GASTROGARD (omeprazole). Post-treatment
scoping 28 days later revealed all of the ulcers had healed. Not
wanting to take any chances with Federal TrialŐs performance,
Mickey Goldfine has kept him on GASTROGARD at the maintenance
dose*. The ulcers have not returned, and Federal Trial is racing
well.
This treatment
also provided an unforseen benefit. Federal Trial usually takes
at least six weeks to bounce back after a race. "We were looking
for something to account for Federal Trial's quick bounce back
time after the Belmont meet, and the only thing that has changed
this time around is treatment with GASTROGARD," Mr. Goldfine said.
Federal Trial ran just one month after he ran at Belmont. Mr.
Goldfine reports this horse will remain on GASTROGARD as long
as he continues to train.*
* The safety
of GASTROGARD has only been studied for a treatment period of
90 days or less.
